Secret Spaces is a project that came from the experience of trying to explore a city when I was on holiday. Rather than looking at the same old guidebooks and trying to do the same things that everybody else does, I spoke to local people and asked them “can you show me somewhere special to you in your hometown?” This question forms the core of Secret Spaces mission. In the time where identities are in crisis and the political dialogue often turns to the negative, Secret Spaces is a response to reviving our love for our community, celebrating it’s diversity and history. So that we remember who we are, where we come from and how we are all connected through shared experience.

The project began as simply a documentation of stories, but quickly became a doorway to accessing the stories and backgrounds of the individuals who spaces are being documented. As a theatre maker my instinct was to try to make this into a show. However the intimacy of a conversation, a story being told in the most simple of ways led me to move away from performance, and into recorded interviews and sound installations. Secret Spaces therefore has become a mapping project, where participants are interviewed and their spaces are uncovered and documented.
